Unusual noises from the engine

If it’s been some time since you took the car in for a service, keep your ears open for strange noises coming from the engine in particular. Odd noises can come in many forms including uneven engine noises and/or clunking gear changes. You’ll usually be able to tell by the unusual clanking coming from your car if something isn’t right .

Smoke coming from the bonnet

This is possibly the most obvious sign that your car needs to be taken to the mechanic ASAP. Smoke or steam coming from the bonnet can suggest that you’ve got a problem with the car overheating, something that cost you a significant amount of money if you don’t get it sorted out sooner rather than later.

Squealing brakes

Worn brake pads are part of the natural wear and tear of a car and will be something you almost certainly need to deal with as a car owner every few years or less. If you are hearing high pitched squeals when you hit the brakes, schedule your vehicle for a checkup.

Engine light

The wonders of modern technology mean that often when the car is in need of a service, it will let you know. If your engine light is lit up or flashing, there’s a reason why.. It will usually light up around the time the car is scheduled to be serviced, so it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to drop everything and get to the mechanic straight away – but you don’t want to leave it too long either.

Leaking and emissions

While it’s not always serious, a lot of the time having oil leak from your engine can be a very bad sign. It usually means worn out oil seals and/or engine gaskets but can also mean radiator trouble. This is not something that you want to be dealing with long term. Leaking coolant from the engine and even the exhaust should also be taken very seriously.

Problems with ignition

Whether it be that the engine doesn’t every time you turn the key or cuts out soon after starting up, ignition problems are a good sign that it’s time to have a pro take a look. It could be due to a variety of causes but the potential is there for something serious or even dangerous.
